As I sit here typing this it’s just past dawn on July 4, 2016.
To me, the real start of summer isn’t the Summer Solstice, nor is it Memorial Day. No, summer doesn’t officially start for me until the day my country celebrates it’s independence. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that the start of summer in New England tends to be fickle and slow to gain consistency. By July at least things are starting to feel a little more like summer. Or maybe it has something to do with how entrenched into American culture the 4th of July is and how much it has come to symbolize everything we also associate with summer: a day off (for some), cookouts, and fireworks. Whatever the reason today marks the real start of my summer and I’m determined to make the most of it.
In honor of today I’ve put together a playlist of summer tunes. Some of them are classics like “Summer of ’69” by Don Henley and “Summer Girls” by LFO. There’s also some Frank Truner, Beans on Toast, and Ben Howard; bands that might not make most traditional summer playlists but that I’d be remiss in putting on mine. So grab a drink and take a listen. Happy First Day of Summer!
